O'Neil she was in her high school year during the auditions, volunteered in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She made it to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the second lowest. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines would read O'Neil defeated Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
